A Republican lawmaker prevented the Wisconsin Assembly from passing a bill that bars schools from using Indian mascots.

Rep. Stephen Nass objected to a final reading of the bill on Tuesday. It could come up for a vote on Wednesday.

The bill fines schools that use Indian mascots, logos or nicknames unless the district demonstrates the usage is not offensive. An amendment also allows tribes to approve the use of their names.

Wisconsin has 36 schools that use Indian imagery.
