Grand Traverse Band eliminates general counsel post
The tribal council of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan voted to restructure its legal department and eliminate the position of general counsel.

The decision means John Petoskey is out of a job. He served as general counsel for the past 23 years.

"They said it was a restructuring, but in my view it wasn't a restructuring," Petoskey told The Traverse City Record-Eagle. "They wanted to get rid of me."

Petoskey alluded to ongoing problems with the tribal council but declined to elaborate due to attorney-client privilege.

The tribe plans to contract out the general counsel position.
