Mashpee Wampanoag elders demand new election
Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Elders of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts called for a new election, saying they need an entirely new slate of leaders.

The elders are upset with Chairman Cedric Cromwell and other leaders. They say they aren't being kept informed about the tribe's finances and aren't happy with the way the council has handled a casino deal.

"The tribe is worse off now than it was before recognition," said critic Sonny Tobey, The Cape Cod Times reported.

A special election will be held December 13 to fill one council seat. Otherwise, the tribe's next election won't take place until February 2010.
