The Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation supports the "perpetual" use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.
The council passed a resolution that says the university has the tribe's "permission" to continue using the name and logo. Tribal members previously voted by a wide margin to support the "Fighting Sioux."
The university, however, still needs the support of the Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe. Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder said the tribe won't be taking action any time soon.
The North Dakota Board of
Higher Education set an October 1 for UND to obtain tribal support. Otherwise, the school has to get rid of the nickname and logo.
