Deadline approaching over 'Sioux' nickname
Supporters of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota are running out of time.

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education set an October 1 deadline for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation to express their views on the issue. So far it doesn't look like either tribe will officially support the "Fighting Sioux."

Archie Fool Bear, a supporter, has been trying to convince Standing Rock leaders to schedule a referendum on the issue but was unsuccessful. He now plans to go through a tribal committee process but only has a few weeks before the next election, on September 30.

In April, Spirit Lake tribal members voted in favor of keeping the nickname and logo. But tribal leaders haven't taken action to reflect the referendum.
