The Cherokee Nation donated more than $305,000 to 124 volunteer fire departments in northeastern Oklahoma.

Each department received a $2,462.19 check during a ceremony at the tribe's casino near Tulsa. "We understand the value of our volunteer fire departments," Chief Chad Smith said, the Associated Press reported. "A large portion of our Cherokee Citizens live in rural areas and depend on the rural fire departments in times of emergency."

The tribe also bestowed honors on fire department that service its communities. Six volunteers received Firefighter of the Year awards.
