Standing Rock Sioux leaders nix 'Sioux' vote
Leaders of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe voted down a request to hold a referendum on the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

But Archie Fool Bear, a nickname supporter, said he would ask the council to consider the issue again. He also is gathering signatures on a petition that seeks to force the tribe to schedule the referendum.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation voted in support of the "Sioux" name and logo but tribal leaders haven't taken action to endorse the action. UND plans to get rid of the nick unless both tribes support it.
