Tribal Canoe Journey heading to Port Madison
The 2009 Tribal Canoe Journey is underway, with crews from the U.S. and Canada headed to the Port Madison Reservation in Washington for a weeklong celebration.

The event began in 1989. Every year, a different tribe hosts the closing Canoe Journey potlach. The Suquamish Tribe is expecting thousands on the reservation from August 3-8.

Today, ten canoes from the U.S. are being hosted by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe before heading to the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe and the Tulalip Tribes at the end of the week.

The Canadian route was due to stop on the Songhees First Nation in British Columbia yesterday but only a few paddlers showed up.
