Maryland man wants to give land to Delaware Tribe
Wednesday, July 1, 2009

A man in Maryland wants to give the 65-acre Fair Island to the Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma.

Carl Ifert has met with tribal members to discuss the transfer. Delaware ancestors, also known as the Lenape, lived in the area before being forced to move west.

Officials in Somerset County said Ifert cant give the land to anyone he wants. But the island is part of the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, so development may be difficult.

The island has no roads, public water and sewer or other services, The Del Marva Daily Times reported.
