Delaware Tribe gets closer to federal recognition

The
Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma is only a step away from regaining federal recognition.
The tribe has been considered a part of the
Cherokee Nation since an 1866 treaty. The two tribes have since signed an agreement to address land, jurisdiction and other issues.
The agreement is part of a constitution that tribal members approved on May 26. All that's left now is for the
Bureau of Indian Affairs to approve the document and recognize the tribe under the
Oklahoma
Indian Welfare Act
Tribal leaders are in Washington, D.C., to meet with
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to discuss their status.
