Utah Supreme Court hears Navajo adoption case
The Utah Supreme Court on Monday heard arguments in an Indian Child Welfare Act case.

The Navajo Nation says the state failed to comply with the law. The tribe says it wasn't provided adequate notice before the adoption of two Navajo children by a non-Indian couple.

"It's our argument that ICWA pre-empts state law," the tribe's attorney told the court, The Salt Lake City Deseret News reported.

Anthony, 9, and Ella, 3, were adopted in February 2008. Their mother, whose parental rights were terminated, is Navajo. The father's rights also were terminated.
