The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina is seeking $18 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The tribe has already received $1.3 million, with most of it going for road and bridge projects. But other needs are pressing, Chief Michell Hicks said.

“Housing continues to be a critical area, and health care continues to be critical,” Hicks told The Asheville Citizen-Times . “Those are probably the most important.”

The recovery act contains $3 billion for Indian Country programs.
