California lawmaker pulls controversial tribal bill
A California lawmaker has pulled a controversial bill that critics said would have given tribes too much power.

State Sen. Dean Florez (D) said there weren't enough votes to advance SB 170. But he indicated he might try to resolve some of the concerns about the bill, which allows tribes the ability to cancel "Williamson Act" contracts on land they purchase

The bill allows tribes to cancel Williamson Act contracts for cultural, housing and infrastructure improvements. It was limited to land next to existing reservations.

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians supported the bill.
