Sen. Specter to switch back to Democratic party
Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania is leaving the Republican party and returning to his Democratic roots.

Specter said he will join Senate Democrats for the rest of the 111th Congress. He will run for re-election in 2010 as a Democrat.

The move helps the Democrats achieve a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, provided that Democrat Al Franken eventually gets seated in his drawn-out recount against former Sen. Norm Coleman, a Republican.

Specter was initially part of the Democratic party in Pennsylvania before switching to the GOP in the 1960s.
