Navajo Nation celebrates Sovereignty Day
The Navajo Nation is honoring its sovereignty today.

Sovereignty Day was first celebrated on April 16, 1985, after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the tribe's right to impose taxes on energy companies. The tribe now marks the occasion on the fourth Monday of April.

"To Navajos, the concept of sovereignty is simple," President Joe Shirley Jr. said in a statement, The Farmington Daily Times reported. "It means being independent and standing on one's own two feet."

The tribe is the largest in the U.S. and has the largest reservation.
