Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Arizona) introduced the Border Security and Responsibility Act on April 23.
Grijalva said the bill will protect tribal lands along the U.S.-Mexico border. H.R. 2076 requires the Department of Homeland Security to consult with tribes on a border security plan.
The bill amends an existing law that allows DHS to ignore environmental and historic preservation laws in order to build a fence along the border. Tribes in Texas and Arizona say they were left out of the process.
The Tigua Tribe of
Texas is asking the U.S.
Supreme Court to hear a case over the law.
