Art Raymond, first Indian lawmaker, dies at 86
Art Raymond, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe who was the first Indian lawmaker in North Dakota, died on Wednesday. He was 86.

Raymond was elected to the North Dakota House in 1970 and served three terms. He used his position to steer funds to Indian programs at the University of North Dakota, where he was he first director of the school's Office of Indian Studies.

Raymond, who attended boarding school, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He began a journalism career in North Dakota after returning after returning home.
