First Nations are getting their own version of a stimulus plan, with the government promising an additional $1.4 billion for employment, housing, infrastructure and health programs over the next two to three years.
Canada's Economic Action Plan includes $200 million for skills and training programs, $400 million for on-reserve housing, $515 million for water and other infrastructure and $325 million for health and child welfare services.
"That money will be available very quickly," said Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl, CBC News reported. "We'll be looking for proposals, and I am sure we will get them from the chiefs .… I have no doubt we will be able to spend it in the next two years."
Canada spend $10 billion on Native programs.
