Donna Mae Largo, a member of the Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians of California, died on March 4. She was 64.

Largo was a respected Cahuilla basket weaver who learned how to weave from tribal elders. She was always eager to pass on the techniques to new generations.

"Donna's gift of teaching touched many, and has left valued memories," Rosemary Morillo, a weaver and vice chairwoman of the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, said in a statement, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

Largo co-founded the Southern California Indian Basket Weavers, now known as Nex'wetem. The group's spring meeting, which was to be held this weekend on the Soboba Reservation, has been canceled.
