Wind River team wins state basketball title

A boys basketball team from the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming won the state Class 2A championship title last Saturday.

The win by the Wyoming Indian Chiefs was the first for the team since 1991. It comes shortly after the deaths of two tribal elders, who were the grandparents of two players.

"It was real tough times for the whole community, because they weren't just Mylan's and Melvin's family members," coach Craig Ferris was quoted as saying. "They were elders in the community, and that's a big thing in our community."

The Chiefs finished the season with a 28-1 record.
