Grand Traverse Band holds first chairmen's summit

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan hosted its first-ever summit of past tribal chairmen.

Since regaining federal recognition in 1980, the tribe has had five leaders. All of them met at the tribe's casino to discuss their history and goals for the future.

“It’s an honor being at the same table with these leaders and it’s satisfying to know how far our tribe has come," said Ardith “Dodie” Chambers, who lead the following its recognition, The Leelanau News reports.

Other past leaders who attended the summit were Joseph C. “Buddy” Raphael, George Bennett and Robert Kewaygoshkum. The current chairman is Derek Bailey.
