The Mushuau Innu First Nation of Newfoundland and Labrador says its alcohol ban has been a success.

Band members in the Innu community of Natuashish voted for the ban a year ago. Residents say it has led to a drop in alcoholism, a drop in crime and an increase in school attendance.

"We've been having more parents coming in for family day [and] the children are a little bit better dressed and taken care of," principal Jackie Williams told CBC News.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says assault charges are down about 50 percent and petty theft reports have dropped by 80 percent.

Natuashish is the first community in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to adopt an alcohol ban.
