Biloxi-Chitimacha Tribe faces loss of land, culture

The Biloxi-Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana fears it will lose its land and culture unless the entire community moves elsewhere.

The tribe has been based on Isle de Jean Charles in the Gulf of Mexico for nearly 200 years. But erosion, and storms like the devastating Hurricane Katrina, have slowly chipped away at the tribe's homeland.

Chief Albert Naquin hopes the entire tribe can relocate to the same place in order to keep the community together. Most of the 68 families that were on the island in 2000 already moved away, leaving only 20 behind.
