The township of Athens, Michigan, is proposing a municipal services deal with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi.
The tribe's 120-acre reservation was placed in trust this summer. To account for the lack of property taxes, the township wants an agreement to cover the cost of fire and emergency medical services.
The tribe previously proposed to pay a flat rate for the services. But the township wants the tribe to pay what it would have otherwise paid had the land not been placed in trust.
"The tribe should pay the same for these services as anybody else," Supervisor Stephen Irons said, The Battle Creek Enquirer reported.
