The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota elected Richard Marcellais as chairman on Tuesday.
The election of Marcellais is unique because he currently serves in the state Senate. He plans to work in both positions.
"I believe that's a big plus for him to serve in both capacities and it gives us a stronger voice with him speaking on our behalf," Turtle Mountain Times editor Logan Davis told The Minot Daily News.
Marcellais also works for the tribe's casino but he will be giving up that job.
