Democrats maintained their majority in both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, adding seats in the Senate and the House.

Democrats now control at least 54 seats in the Senate, along with two independents who organize with the party. Close races in Georgia, Minnesota, Oregon and Alaska remain unsettled, so the final outcome won't be known for a few more weeks.

In the House, Democrats gained at least 18 or 19 seats, according to news reports. "Two years and two days ago, we had 203 Democrats in the Congress," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) was quoted as saying. "I don't know what the final number will be in this election, but it will be well over 250, and that is as a result of not one wave two years ago but as a result of two waves."
