Ousted Mille Lacs leader to run for office again
Melanie Benjamin hopes to regain her job as chief executive of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe of Minnesota.

Benjamin was removed from her post after allegations of misusing tribal funds. She denies the charges and plans to file to run in the special election the tribe will be holding.

"I have not been convicted of any crime. I am not a felon," she told The Mille Lacs Messenger amid suggestions that she may be ineligible to run for office.

The removal of Benjamin as chief executive was a first in the tribe's history.
