More Indian students enter college in New Mexico
More and more Indian students are going to public universities and colleges in New Mexico, according to a report from the state Higher Education Department.

About 9.5 percent of the 130,388 students at public universities are Indian, the report said. American Indians make up 10.5 percent of the overall population.

The number of Indian students who complete four-year programs has risen 34 percent from 1998 to 2007. The study said most Indian students are enrolled in associate or certificate programs.

The study also looked at tribal college enrollment. About 2,200 students attend the four tribal institutions in the state.
