New Mexico lawmakers discuss fake Indian art
The New Mexico Legislature's Indian Affairs Committee made a field visit to Gallup to learn more about fake Indian arts and crafts.

The federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act requires goods that are marketed as Indian to be produced by Indians. But Tony Eriacho, the president of the Council for Indigenous Arts and Culture, said dishonest dealers find a way around the law.

"You have every right to know exactly what you're buying," Eriacho told the committee.

Eriacho said loopholes in customs laws allow goods made in other countries to be labeled as Indian.
