Aurelius Piper, Paugussett chief, dies at 92
Aurelius H. Piper Sr., the longtime chief of the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe of Connecticut, died on Sunday. He was 92.

Piper led the tribe's fight to gain federal recognition. After several appeals during the Clinton and Bush administrations, the Bureau of Indian Affairs rejected the tribe in June 2004.

The tribe is recognized by the state and has a reservation, where Piper lived at the time of his death.
