Bush lifts executive ban on offshore drilling
President Bush lifted an executive order that bans offshore drilling on Monday.

Bush called on Democrats in Congress to do the same. Language in the Interior appropriations act includes provisions to prohibit drilling in offshore areas.

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) supports lifting the moratorium. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) does not.

The executive branch's ban on offshore drilling was instituted in 1990 by Bush's father, former president George H.W. Bush.
