New Mexico seeks to delay Navajo power plant
The state of New Mexico is asking a federal judge to delay action on the Navajo Nation's power plant.

A federal judge ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to finalize a decision on an air permit for the Desert Rock Energy Project by the end of this month. The tribe filed the application more than four years ago.

The state is now seeking to join the lawsuit, citing flaws in EPA's review process. The power plant would be located in Shiprock, New Mexico.

Navajo activists and residents who live near Shiprock oppose the project. They say it will destroy the environment and harm sacred sites.

The $3 billion Desert Rock is a partnership between the tribe and Sithe Global Power of Texas.
