William C. “Bill” Mesa, the chairman of the Jamul Band of Kumeyaay Indians of California, and his daughter-in-law were died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday.
Mesa lost control of the motorcycle and struck a power pole, police said. The accident is being investigated but alcohol may have been a factor.
Mesa, 57, was elected chairman a year ago. He served 20 years in the local police department.
Crystal Roberts-Mesa, 29, married Mesa's son, Robert, less than a year ago.
