Gas taxes an issue as prices reach record high
Dual tribal and state taxation of gasoline in New Mexico is hurting members of the Navajo Nation.

The tribe and the state reached agreement over regular gasoline taxes. The tribe imposes a tax similar to the state's.

But diesel fuel remains subject to dual taxation. That means tribal members in New Mexico can end up paying an additional 17 cents per gallon.

"No vacation this year," Ronnie Ross told The Farmington Daily Times after he spent $25 to fill up a 5-gallon gas can with diesel.
