Bush seeks to end ban on offshore drilling
President Bush is lending his support to efforts to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling, the White House said.

Drilling is banned by an executive order issued by Bush's father in 1990. Congress also prohibits new drilling through appropriations law.

Bush is considering a repeal of the executive order and supports Republican legislation in Congress to lift the moratorium. Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the presumptive Republican nominee for president, also supports offshore drilling.
