Indian Congressional candidate stirs controversy
Thursday, May 22, 2008

Benny Shendo Jr., a candidate for New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District, is stirring controversy among his Democratic opponents for raising questions about one of his rivals' "lifestyle."

At a candidate forum in Farmington, Shendo implied that Ben Ray Lujan, who is considered a leading candidate, is hiding his sexual orientation from the public. Shendo said Lujan is being forced by his parents -- his father is House Speaker Ben Lujan -- to bring his girlfriend to campaign events.

Lujan, his supporters and other Democrats denounced Shendo, who is from Jemez Pueblo, for raising the issue. Lujan said he has been with his girlfriend since the fall of 2007.

Shendo is trailing in funds to Lujan and Don Wiviott, who is also considered a top candidate. Shendo was a former Cabinet secretary for Gov. Bill Richardson (D).
