Navajo woman named Indian Educator of the Year

Gloria Hale, a member of the Navajo Nation, has been named the 2008 New Mexico Indian Educator of the Year.
Hale is the director of Indian Education for the
Grants/Cibola County School District. She was recognized for her efforts to secure funding to teach the Navajo and Keres languages.
“When Arizona became an 'English Only' state in 2003, I realized it was time to retire and seek other educational opportunities that support indigenous language and culture,” Hale tells The Cibola Beacon of the reason she ended up in New Mexico.
Forty-one percent of students in the district are Native American, mainly from the
Navajo Nation, Acoma Pueblo and Laguna Pueblo.
