Jury continues deliberations in Narragansett case

Jury deliberations in the Narragansett raid case continued on Wednesday as jurors appear to be considering some tough issues.

Twice, the jury asked Judge Susan E. McGuirl for clarifications about their role in determining whether seven tribal members -- including Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas -- are guilty of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in connection with the state's July 14, 2003, raid of the reservation.

The second note prompted McGuirl to send the jury home for the day, The Providence Journal reported. She would not say whether jurors were deadlocked but she plans to give them further instructions today, the paper said.

The case attracted national attention after video of the violent clash between state troopers and tribal members aired across the country. The tribe took the state to court but the federal courts ruled the state has the authority to enforce its laws on the reservation.
