Jury begins deliberations in Narragansett case

A jury deliberated for four hours on charges against seven members of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island who were arrested during the state's raid of the reservation.

The jury has seven women and five men, The Providence Journal reported. Only one represents an ethnic or racial minority, an issue that was raised in court yesterday.

Defense lawyer William P. Devereaux wanted the three alternate jurors to weigh the case, in addition to the 12. One is Native and another is a minority.

The state objected and the judge said she had to stick with the 12 jurors.
