BIA urges mediation in Lac du Flambeau dispute

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is urging some type of mediation to address a split within the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa of Wisconsin.

BIA officials, including assistant secretary Carl Artman and Midwest regional director Terry Virden, have agreed to look into allegations of corruption and misuse of funds. Tribal leaders say there is nothing to hide.

But some tribal members insist something is going on. Fourteen of them were arrested on Wednesday after the occupied the tribal headquarters for more than 14 hours on Wednesday. They were arraigned on criminal trespassing charges yesterday.
