Native man from Canada given U.S. green card

A Native man from Canada has been given a U.S. green card after his right to cross the border freely was questioned.

Peter Roberts, a dentist from British Columbia, is a member of the Campbell River Indian Band. He asserted his right under the Jay Treaty to enter the U.S. without a passport but his status was challenged by border officials.

The issue was being considered by an immigration judge. Roberts was due for a hearing until U.S. officials decided to issue him a green card to allow him free passage and the right to work and live in the U.S.
