Sen. Johnson files papers for third Senate term

Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota), a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, has filed papers to seek a third term in the U.S. Senate.

Johnson suffered a brain hemorrhage in December 2006. He has recovered remarkably and returned to work to sponsor Indian bills and attend committee hearings.

Johnson previously faced a tough challenge from now-Sen. John Thune (R) in 2002. Indian voters helped Johnson win that race.

With Thune already in the Senate, South Dakota Republicans are trying to field a candidate to run against Johnson this November.
