Prairie Band uses device to preserve Potawatomi

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas is turning to technology to preserve its language.

Only six people are fluent in Potawatomi, according to The Topeka Capital-Journal. So the tribe purchased the Language Companion, which was originally designed for military use, to record and preserve the language.

"We're doing our part to make sure [the language] stays. Our goal is to reach our families and their children," Sydney Van Zile, the director of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Language Center, told the paper.

The tribe bought three of the $3,000 devices and is receiving training through Thornton Media Inc.
