Yakama Nation explains firing of police chief

The Yakama Nation of Washington has fired its police chief whom tribal leaders say was never properly hired in the first place.

Davis Washines was fired last Thursday. Tribal leaders say he didn't meet all the requirements for the job even though he's held it more than two year.

Tribal leaders also say Washines failed to follow through on a promise to reopen the tribe's detention center. The facility was shut down in January 2005 after a suicide and an attempted suicide.

But Washines says he was fired for political reasons. He says the detention center was taken out of his control sometime last year.
