Mohegan Tribe helps school develop mascot

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is helping a public school develop a culturally appropriate mascot.

Uncas Elementary School is named for Chief Sachem Uncas, who led the tribe in the 16th century. But the mascot originally chosen by the school looked more like a Plains Indian.

That's when Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel, the tribe's historian and a descendant of Chief Uncas, stepped in. She helped the school develop three options for a mascot that more accurately represents the chief.

The student body will vote on their favorite representation.
