KBIC members debate ouster of Dakota from council

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Michigan has certified a petition to remove controversial former chairman Fred Dakota from the tribal council.

Dakota was elected less than two weeks ago. But detractors don't want a former felon -- Dakota served time for tax evasion and bribery -- on their council.

"I believe the gist of our petition is simply we don't want a felon to represent us in any way, shape or form whatever," elder Ginnyann Jermac told The Houghton Daily Mining Gazette.

But Dakota questioned how he can be removed when he hasn't done anything. "How can you put charges on me when I was only on the council 20 minutes before they brought the damn paper in. What's that all about?" he told the paper

"I’m not a quitter," he added.

The KBIC council will meet February 22 to consider the next step in the process.
