Fort Peck Tribes shut down long-running newspaper

Leaders of the Fort Peck Tribes of Montana voted last week to shut down the Wotanin Wowapi newspaper.

The tribal-owned paper provided news on the reservation for nearly 40 years. But it recently saw turmoil, with five editors hired and fired in the past two years alone.

"In my opinion, it was politics," council member Floyd Azure told The Great Falls Tribune. Azure voted against ending the paper.

Other tribal leaders, however, said the move was a business decision. They said the paper wasn't making any money.
