Oklahoma urged to create tribal cabinet position

The Oklahoma Academy on Tuesday presented a report that recommended the state create a Cabinet position for tribal relations.

The Secretary for State and Tribal Relations would oversee tribal-state partnerships. "It could give the state the opportunities to work together,” said Neal McCaleb, former state transportation secretary and former assistant secretary for Indian affairs.

The recommendation was one of 131 that were developed by Oklahoma Academy during a three-day town hall meeting last October. Representatives of the 39 federally recognized and historic tribes met with state officials and business leaders.
