Prairie Island Tribe swears in council members
The Prairie Island Indian Community of Minnesota swore in the members to its tribal council on Thursday.

Five people -- all first cousins -- are serving on the council. They selected Ron Johnson as president, Johnny Johnson as vice president Lu Taylor as secretary Victoria Winfrey as treasurer and Shelley Buck-Yeager as assistant secretary/treasurer.

Except for Buck-Yeager, all the council members are incumbents. “All five of us pretty much do what’s in the best interest of the tribe,” Taylor, who is serving her fifth term on the council, told The Republican Eagle.

Tribal council members said their priorities include the removal of nuclear waste from a nearby site. The tribe supports the federal government's Yucca Mountain waste repository in Nevada, which is located on traditional Western Shoshone land.
