Blackfeet Nation cleans up 200 tons at dump site

The Blackfeet Nation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and local agencies cleaned up 200 tons of garbage from an illegal dump site on the reservation.

Students, employees and volunteers worked seven days a week for nearly two weeks to remove the garbage. "To do a big project like this, one department wouldn't have the money or resources," Blackfeet Housing Beautification Coordinator Robin Bird told The Great Falls Tribune. "But we pulled together and we got it done."

Ray Wilson, the director of Blackfeet Housing, said there are between 50 and 75 documented dumpsites and another 75 to 125 that haven't been reported. "They exist in nearly every nook and cranny of our reservation," he told the paper.

The Environmental Protection Agency closed the reservation dump in Browning two years ago for failing to meet federal standards.
